MBBS Admission: Mentally disabled individuals will now receive reservations in MBBS admissions. The National Medical Commission has issued interim guidelines regarding this. However, adequate standards for assessing mental disabilities are currently lacking. The Commission's experts have stated that these guidelines will be implemented after studying global standards.
Currently, reservations for individuals with disabilities have been proposed in five categories. Under current rules, a total of five percent reservations can be granted to individuals with disabilities, including candidates from all categories such as SC, ST, OBC, and EWS.
Experts will set standards for mental disabilities
Reservations for behavioral disabilities have been stated to be necessary. They will be provided, but currently, there are a lack of standards for assessing them. Therefore, experts will determine the standards and then implement them. However, the NMC has agreed in principle to allow individuals with mental behavioral disabilities to enter medical schools. The fifth category includes those with multiple disabilities. This category provides for reservation benefits.
Reservation for Disability Less Than 80%
The interim guidelines provide for admission to MBBS courses for disabled candidates from the current 2025-26 academic year. According to this, reservations are provided for medical admissions in physical, intellectual, and other categories (including disabilities caused by neurological and blood disorders) for those with disabilities with a disability greater than 40% but less than 80%. However, even within this range, certain conditions are necessary for medical education, such as finger movement and visual impairment.
