Fans of Aamir Khan are eagerly anticipating his next film, Sitaare Zameen Par, the spiritual sequel to his 2007 hit Taare Zameen Par. In a recent conversation with his China-based fan club, which was shared on X (formerly Twitter), Aamir gave fans a deeper look into the film's storyline and his character, which marks a sharp departure from the beloved role he portrayed in the first film.
Aamir Khan's Character in 'Sitaare Zameen Par'
Aamir Khan shared exciting insights into his role in Sitaare Zameen Par, revealing that it is not a direct sequel to Taare Zameen Par, but thematically, it pushes the narrative even further. He explained, “I am working on a film now, which is almost ready. It is the sequel of Taare Zameen Par. Thematically, it is going ten steps ahead. It is about people who are differently abled, about love, friendship, and life. Taare Zameen Par made you cry, but this film will make you laugh. It’s a comedy, but the theme is the same.”
Unlike his sensitive and empathetic role as Ram Shankar Nikumbh in Taare Zameen Par, Aamir's character in the new film takes a completely different turn. He plays Gulshan, a basketball coach whose personality is the polar opposite of Nikumbh’s. "My character in Taare Zameen Par was Nikumbh, who is a very sensitive person. In this film, my character’s name is Gulshan, but his personality is exactly opposite to Nikumbh. He is not sensitive at all. He is very rude, politically incorrect, and he insults everybody," Aamir explained. He further elaborated on his character's demeanor, describing how Gulshan fights with his wife, mother, and even his senior coach. His character is troubled, battling with numerous internal issues.
The Emotional Arc of the Film
Despite his harsh and insensitive behavior, the film revolves around Gulshan’s transformation. Aamir shared that the story is about how Gulshan learns from the individuals he interacts with, especially those with disabilities, and how these experiences teach him the importance of becoming a better human being. “He is a person with a lot of internal problems, and the story is how he changes with the film. How these people in the spectrum teach him what it is to be a good human being,” Aamir said.
The film is a remake of the Spanish movie Champions, which tells the story of a disgraced basketball coach who is assigned to train a team of athletes with intellectual disabilities. Sitaare Zameen Par will follow a similar narrative but with an Indian twist, bringing the emotional and comedic elements to the forefront.
Sitaare Zameen Par Cast
Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par also stars Darsheel Safary, who appeared alongside Aamir in Taare Zameen Par, and actress Genelia Deshmukh in pivotal roles. While the film has generated significant excitement, the official release date is still awaited.
Aamir's fans are eagerly looking forward to seeing him in this radically different role.
