Indian opener Smriti Mandhana notched her 11th ODI century when she reached the three-figure mark against Sri Lanka in the tri-series final on Sunday at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The star Indian batter scored 116 runs off just 101 balls, including 15 fours and two sixes. The 28-year-old now has the third most centuries in Women's ODIS as she surpassed England’s Tammy Beaumont, who has ten centuries to her name. Only Meg Lanning (15 centuries) and Suzie Bates (13 centuries) are now ahead of Mandhana in the list.
Mandhana is only 271 runs behind Lanning’s ODI run tally. Overall, Mandhana is ninth among the all-time highest run-scorers in Women’s ODIs. She is also the second Indian to go past the 4,000-run mark in the format after Mithali Raj.
The southpaw began her innings cautiously after India captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and opted to bat first. The batter mixed caution with aggression as she unleashed her shots time to time and unsettled Sri Lankan bowlers.
Mandhana was involved in a 70-run opening partnership with Pratika Rawal as the duo began taking taking more risks after a cautious start.
After losing Rawal for 30 (49), Mandhana turned aggressor to not let the pressure get the better of Harleen Deol. She brought her up second successive half century off 55 balls.
Batting on 88 off 89 balls, Mandhana took on Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu and hit her for four successive fours to bring up her century off 92 balls and put India in a commanding position.
Mandhana was dismissed for 116 while searching for a third consecutive boundary against Dewmi Vihanga but holed out at point. Her dismissal also brought an end to a massive 120-run stand off 106 balls for the second wicket with Harleen Deol, who scored 47 runs off 56 balls.
This was Mandhana's first ODI century against Sri Lanka. She now has 4,450 runs in 102 ODIs at an average of over 46, including 31 fifties.
Mandhana's knock helped India post an imposing total of 342/7 in 50 overs. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur scored 41 runs off 30 balls and Jemimah Rodrigues got 44 runs off 29 balls as India finished with a florish.
