WhatsApp is finally stepping into the Apple Watch ecosystem in a big way. The popular messaging app is reportedly testing a dedicated Apple Watch app, giving users more freedom to chat, reply, and stay connected without constantly reaching for their iPhone.
A Proper WhatsApp App, Not Just Notifications
Until now, Apple Watch users only had access to mirrored WhatsApp notifications you could read, maybe reply, but not really use the app. That’s changing.
The new update introduces a full-fledged companion app that lets you:
Still Tethered to Your iPhone (For Now)
While it’s a big step forward, there’s a catch the Apple Watch version isn’t completely standalone yet.
Unlike WhatsApp’s Wear OS app for Android, this one still needs an active iPhone connection for messaging. You can’t leave your phone behind just yet. But it’s a start, and given the beta status, more independence could be coming soon.
Simple Setup, Smarter Sync
Pairing is seamless. Once your Apple Watch is linked to your iPhone, WhatsApp syncs automatically no QR codes or manual setup required. You’ll even see a connection status indicator to know when your watch is syncing or disconnected.
A Step Toward Smarter Wearable Messaging
With better notification handling, emoji reactions, disappearing chat indicators, and pinned messages, WhatsApp is finally catching up to what Apple Watch users have been asking for.
It may not be fully independent yet, but this rollout clearly signals WhatsApp’s intent to go all-in on wearables.
If you’re part of the WhatsApp Beta for iOS, you can try the update right now. A wider release is expected in the coming months.
