Parenting Tips: Milk is considered a superfood for health. Parents often feed their children milk daily for their optimal growth. But did you know that excessive milk can be harmful? Pediatrician Arpit Gupta shared a video on his Instagram account. In the video, the doctor explains that most parents in India feed their children milk frequently, especially when the child refuses to eat. But this habit can lead to many health problems later on.
What do experts say?
Dr. Gupta says that we become overly obsessed with milk. Most parents think that the child is not eating, so they feed them milk. But this habit causes iron deficiency, anemia, and poor growth in children. In fact, when children drink too much milk, they become full and start eating less solid food. As a result, the body doesn't receive adequate amounts of essential nutrients like iron, protein, vitamins, and minerals.
How much milk should a child be fed?
According to doctors, children don't need a lot of milk after one year of age. About 500 ml (half a liter) of milk a day is sufficient. Giving more than this can cause a child to avoid food. Milk is a good source of calcium and protein, but it isn't a complete diet. Foods like lentils, rice, bread, vegetables, fruits, and nuts are also essential for a child's development.
If a child is very fond of drinking milk, parents can gradually reduce the amount. After the child turns 6 months old, feed them small meals while sitting with you. This will help them get used to eating solid foods, and by the age of one, they will be able to eat properly. Children's bodies need not only calcium but also iron, zinc, vitamins, and fiber. All of these nutrients can only be obtained from solid foods.
