The IPL 2025 season has been temporarily suspended due to the rising tension between India and Pakistan. During this period, the 58th match of the season between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was stopped midway in Dharamsala. The match was halted after just 10.1 overs, and fans were evacuated from the stadium. Initially, it was reported that the match had been suspended due to a fault in the floodlights. However, it was later revealed that the decision was made after receiving warnings of possible air strikes in neighboring cities of Jammu and Punjab.
What Happened in Dharamsala?IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal revealed that the situation took a sudden turn during a strategic timeout when he was informed about the air raid sirens in two neighboring cities. One of these cities was less than 100 km away from Dharamsala. At the time, around 25,000 fans were in the stadium, unaware of the security concerns. Dhumal described this as one of the most challenging days for the IPL.
The biggest challenge for Dhumal and the IPL team was ensuring the safe and efficient evacuation of the 25,000 fans without causing panic, while also managing the players’ safety. To prevent a stampede, the initial reason for stopping the match was given as a floodlight failure. Dhumal emphasized that this was a necessary measure to avoid alarming the fans further.
Arun Dhumal Shares His ExperienceIn an interview with PTI, Dhumal explained the sequence of events. "During the strategic timeout, I was told about the blackout protocol. We had very little time, but I immediately informed the top officials of Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings management about the situation," Dhumal shared. He went on to explain that when the lights were turned off, many fans were reluctant to leave, as Punjab was batting in an exciting manner. Despite this, fans evacuated without protest, thanks to the efforts of the local police and district administration. Dhumal praised the cooperation and discipline shown by the fans and authorities in handling the situation smoothly.
IPL Suspended for a WeekAs of now, IPL 2025 has been suspended for one week. The situation will be reassessed after seven days, and based on the review, the BCCI will announce a new schedule for the remaining matches. The season will then resume once it is deemed safe.
