An American diner was taken to by his British partner for the first time and his reaction was somewhat unexpected.
In Britain, a roast dinner is a rite of passage, a meal staple - and it's usually a dish which evokes gleeful praise from anyone with a plate filled with golden roast potatoes, a meat of choice, greens and Yorkshire puddings dripping in gravy.
But this one man from the US didn’t hesitate to compare his with something that’s celebrated back home. Although he claimed to have had “dreamt of this moment” and “waited all his life” to try Toby Carvery, he compared his British experience with a huge American holiday.
The couple, Matt and Omar from San Francisco, are known on for their food critique videos - which have earned them 1.4 million followers. They flew to the UK for Omar’s sibling’s nuptials, and spent their free time visiting Borough Market, , and of course, Toby Carvery. Matt and Omar also tried fish and chips and Cadbury Creme Eggs. A little bit of everything.

They visited Toby Carvery in Bolton, Great Manchester, where Matt and Omar enjoyed a delicious Sunday Roast meal. Sharing their experience on their conjoint TikTok account @mattandomar, Omar said: “I took my American husband to Toby Carvery for the first time.”
Matt then expressed his enthusiasm, saying that he was “so excited”. He chose turkey and pork as his meats, piling up his plate with stuffing, spuds, a Yorkshire pudding and vegetables.
“What is a Yorkshire pudding? I thought pudding was a dessert?," he asked. But once he tried his meal, he spilled the three controversial words, which were: “That is Thanksgiving.”
Matt explained: “It tastes like Thanksgiving in a bite. You can have Thanksgiving all the time here. We only have it once a year and you can have it all the time. This is heaven.” Although he wasn’t a fan of the cauliflower cheese, he was said to be “happy” at the experience he had.

Naturally, the video gathered a lot of attention from other follower. A fan wrote: “As an American, I loved Toby Carvery.” A second one added: “I love me a Toby Carvery. I live in Canada and crave a Toby whenever the weather is sad.” The restaurant itself also left a comment underneath their video, replying: “We are obsessed.”
On the other hand, not everyone seems to be a fan of Toby Carvery, as some users shared their bad experiences. One user recalled: “My boyfriend is British and last year he took me to Toby Carvery because I always wanted to go and I literally cried because the food was disgusting.”
Another commented: “I’m British, love a roast, but Toby Carvery is awful.” Matt and Omar got told to add Wetherspoons to their list of British culinary spots to visit.
