Manchester United have signed Benjamin Sesko because he has all the attributes they crave – but Ruben Amorim thinks they might have to rein one of them in.
United have signed Sesko from RB Leipzig for a fee of £66.4m plus a further £7.6m in potential add-ons. The 22-year-old striker has signed a five-year contract with United and will line up alongside fellow new arrivals Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo this season.
Sesko chose United over Newcastle, who also had a bid accepted by Leipzig, and could make his debut when Amorim’s side begin their Premier League campaign against Arsenal next weekend. He was unveiled at Old Trafford before United’s final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina on Saturday, with Amorim explaining what attracted him to the Slovenia international.
“He has the characteristics that we needed,” Amorim told MUTV. “Ben is a player that, with all the information that we have, we need to stop the guy from working – it is not the opposite! That is also important.

“He is really young, he is good in the air, he is good at running the channels and he is good on the ball, so I think he has great potential. I think he can improve a lot.
“For sure, he is going to feel at home in our club. He is the right character in this group so we are really, really happy to have him.”
United recently returned from their pre-season tour of the United States and have a new £236m training complex to enjoy at Carrington. After a miserable 2024/25 campaign, in which they finished 15th in the league and lost the Europa League final, Amorim believes Sesko is walking into a better environment.

He added: "That is important, and he is going to notice on the first day, in the first training [session] that he is in the right place. He is going to the new building and that is also important. Things are getting better, but in the end, we need to win games, and we will try to start today.”
Sesko could have played in the Champions League if he’d joined Newcastle, but snubbed them for United. “The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future," he said. “When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon.
“From the moment that I arrived, I could feel the positive energy and family environment that the club has created. It is clearly the perfect place to reach my maximum level and fulfil all of my ambitions.
“I cannot wait to start learning from Ruben and connecting with my team-mates to achieve the success that we all know we are capable of together.”
