BBC MasterChef fans all ask same question as sacked hosts front new series

BBC viewers were left stunned as Gregg Wallace and John Torode appeared in the latest series of MasterChef despite both being axed earlier this year.

The pair, who had fronted the hit cooking competition together for nearly two decades, were dropped by the BBC following behind-the-scenes allegations. But fans were left scratching their heads when a pre-recorded episode featuring the duo aired as part of the new series, and they all took to social media to ask the same thing.

One typed: "Wait... are Gregg and John watching this at home after being sacked?" The hashtag #MasterChef quickly lit up with confused and cheeky reactions to the unfolding situation.

One shared a GIF that said "What the f did I do" and typed alongside it, "John Torode at home watching MasterChef". Another commented: "Are John and Gregg watching themselves from the sofa like the rest of us now?"

The BBC came under fire after deciding to broadcast the latest season of MasterChef despite a damning internal report revealing more than 40 upheld complaints against long-time host Wallace, and claims co-star Torode used a racist term.

The new amateur series, which began airing on August 6, was filmed before the report was commissioned and features both Wallace and Torode in their usual judging roles. Insiders say the corporation struggled with the decision, but ultimately chose to go ahead with the broadcast after "careful consultation" with the contestants.

"This has not been an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone will agree with it," a BBC spokesperson said. "In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters."

The spokesperson added that MasterChef is a "life-changing" opportunity for the amateur chefs taking part, and the focus would remain on their culinary talent, not the controversy. But critics say the move undermines the BBC's standards on behaviour, and many viewers have expressed frustration online, accusing the broadcaster of "sweeping the scandal under the rug".

Saturday Kitchen presenter Matt Tebbutt has been rumoured to replace Wallace as the face of MasterChef in future series and could be joined by Andi Oliver, 62, best known for presenting Great British Menu, in a move that insiders say will give the show a much-needed refresh and steer it away from controversy.
