Countryfile's Adam Henson reflects on feeling 'inadequate'

Countryfile's Adam Henson travelled to Wiltshire, where he met the Lemon family on their farm close to the village of Wilton. During the visit, the presenter encountered a man who offered him valuable guidance as a college graduate. In Sunday's edition of the BBC programme (July 27), Adam explored the farm's heritage, which encompasses decades of dedication from multiple generations, including 18 year old James, who is already a passionate farmer.

The 16th-century operation is predominantly arable but is transforming as the family reconsiders how they cultivate their land, which spans 1335 hectares of wheat, barley, oilseed rape, and maize. Three generations of the family collaborate to ensure the enterprise continues flourishing for years to come, reports Gloucestershire Live.

Manor Farm's journey started with David Lemon, who subsequently passed it to his son Peter in 1970.

Peter's son David then assumed control 20 years ago alongside his wife Millie.

Their teenage son James is already determined to establish a robust future in sustainable farming.

During their discussion, Adam reflected on the initial stages of his agricultural career, whilst James shared his aspirations for the future within the sector.

This prompted his grandfather, Peter, to offer some of his invaluable farming wisdom.

He remarked: "I'm a great believer that no farmer's son should go home immediately after college.

"You will make man management mistakes, and if you go home, your mistake will be there for the rest of your life. If you go and work on another farm and run that, you will make mistakes, you always will, we all have, but then you leave it behind."

Host Adam then remembered a chat he'd had with Peter at his own father's request regarding his farming career.

He revealed to James: "So your grandad gave me some advice when I was, well, a little bit older than you, when I was out of college.

"My dad called him up and said, 'You need to come home and put my boy straight', So he came and gave me some very good worldly advice."

Adam quipped: "In fact, made me feel a little bit inadequate, to be honest. I realised I had to step up to the plate a bit."

He continued: "But we have been successful ever since, so that's all right", as the trio chuckled.
