The Government has issued a response after concerns were raised about some Universal Credit claimants. Liberal Democrat MP Wendy Chamberlain asked the Government about the on-going work to move people over to the benefit. People on several older benefits such as Jobseeker's Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance, are being gradually moved over to Universal Credit.
The DWP is writing to those who still need to move over, outlining that you need to get in your claim for the new benefit or your payments will eventually stop. Ms Chamberlain said: "In North East Fife we are seeing a transition to Universal Credit that means that vulnerable constituents-often those with dyslexia or learning disabilities -are really struggling.
"They are not being offered the enhanced support journey, and all are suffering due to departments not communicating and miscalculations." The enhanced support process provides extra help such as additional contact over the phone or even a home visit, to help a person get their application in.
The support was brought in to support households on Income Support and Employment and Support Allowance in their move to Universal Credit. Ms Chamberlain also asked if there could be a debate on the issue, warning that the issue likely affects people in many parts of the UK.
Lucy Powell, leader of the House of Commons, responded to the question from Ms Chamberlain. She said: "I am sorry to hear about the cases in the honourable lady's constituency. I am sure the issues will be familiar to other honourable members, especially those representing constituencies in Scotland.
"I am happy to facilitate a response from the Minister, so that we can make sure that the necessary steps are in place to alleviate the situation."
All people on Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit have now moved over to Universal Credit, and the tax credits system has now ended. Some people on these benefits still need to move over:
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)
- Housing Benefit.
