Households in Britain could be losing up to £3.2 billion annually because of poor home insulation, new analysis suggests. Customers across the country have struggled to pay their energy bills in recent months and years, and they are set to increase again on October 1, when a new energy price cap takes effect. However, heat escaping through walls, roofs and windows remains one of the largest contributors to mounting costs, according to energy specialist David Walker.
"Thousands of people don't realise how much more money is disappearing out of their homes every year," Mr Walker, who works at OHMS Renewables, said. "Poor insulation doesn't just mean higher bills; it also makes your home less comfortable, harder to heat, and can even reduce the overall value of the property." Whole-house insulation, covering lofts, floors and walls could collectively save households up to £730 annually, according to OHMS estimates.
Ahead of a rise in the energy cap next month, public interest in insulation has reportedly soared, with over 718,000 online searches for the term over the past month as Brits look for ways to cut costs however they can.
"With energy bills still sitting well above pre-crisis levels, investing in proper insulation is one of the smartest and most cost-effective decisions a household can make in 2025," Mr Walker said.
"From walls and floors to lofts and roof spaces, even straightforward upgrades can save hundreds of pounds annually while also cutting carbon emissions and supporting a greener future."
He warned homeowners and renters that a "sudden or unexplained increase in heating costs, even if usage patterns haven't changed", is often an early sign of largescale insulation problems.
While comprehensive insulation can save homes over £700, more focused installation could also help families across Britain cope with spiralling costs elsewhere.
Tackling cold or damp walls with cavity or solid wall insulation could save households up to £315 a year, upgrading to up to 270mm of loft insulation could save up to £390 and installing floor insulation could help customers save an annual £135.
"The benefits go beyond financial savings," Mr Walker added. "A well-insulated home stays warmer in winter and cooler in summer, creating a healthier, more stable living environment. It reduces the risk of damp and mould growth, protects against droughts and even helps to cut down on outside noise.
"That means lower heating bills, fewer health concerns and a home that feels comfortable all year round."
