According to the Sunday Times Rich List, King Charles' wealth has increased by £30 million in the past year, but he only ranks at number 238 in Britain. In 2024, King Charles's net worth was estimated at £610 million and comparatively, the late Queen Elizabeth II's estimated net worth was £370 million at the time of her death.
A former palace aide explained King Charles worked to "carefully rebuild his finances" after his £17 million divorce from Diana, Princess of Wales in 1996, according to the Sunday Times.
The aide also dispelled rumours that Camilla contributed to his influx in cash. They said: "There have been suggestions that Camilla brought a good deal of money into their relationship, but that's really not correct."
Royal biographer Robert Hardman also explained how the monarchy "isn't as wealthy as many people would believe".
As the Sunday Times pointed out, the Duchy of Lancaster and the Crown Estate aren't the King's "personal assets," and have not been taken into account when estimating his total wealth.
Journalist Robert Watts previously claimed: "To consider these the King's personal holdings would be akin to an executive viewing the office laptop or the company car parked on their driveway as their own."
The fact that Charles's personal wealth now exceeds his mother's may give him more flexibility in private matters, investments, and in managing his personal finances, separate from the official apparatus of the monarchy.
The Times also writes there is the "even more confusing question" of the monarch's mass of art and jewellery, as well as the countless gifts that have been bestowed on Royal Family members over the centuries.
Much of it is in the Royal Collection, a store of more than a million objects including tapestries, manuscripts, sculptures, artworks and pieces of furniture, many of which are displayed in royal residences.
As with the Crown Estate and the Duchy of Lancaster, this collection is not owned personally by the monarch but is "held in trust by him as sovereign for his successors and the nation".
