Locals in a UK town were "gutted" following the immediate closure of a popular restaurant that was forced to shut down. Head chef and owner of the fine dining spot in Winterbourne near Newbury confirmed the news on social media on Thursday, September 11.

Damson closed its doors the following day due to financial and "external" factors. Head chef Henry Kremer-Ireson did not detail the finances, however it is a trend seen across the hospitality industry after Rachel Reeves increased the minimum wage payments and national insurance contributions. Head chef Henry Kremer-Ireson said: "It is with a heavy heart that I must announce the closure of Damson, with immediate effect. This affects all bookings from September 12, 2025."

"Whilst this may come as a shock, it's after much consideration and extensive efforts to explore alternative options, regrettably, the decision has been made that we are unable to continue forward, driven by several financial and external factors.

"I want to express, on behalf of the entire Damson team, our deepest thanks for your incredible support and loyalty over the past two years. You have been the heart of our restaurant; it has been a great privilege to serve you all."

Damson had served "ingredient-led" dishes from Thursday to Sunday for around two years in the Reading area, with three courses priced at around £65, and a tasting menu for £95.

One person on Damon's Facebook page said they were "gutted," adding that it was "sensational food and an exceptional experience".

They added: "I pray you resurface in a kitchen locally soon, as you have such an unbelievable talent. Best of luck with the next chapter, Henry!"

Another person said: "So very sad to hear your news. We loved our visits, not only for the amazing food but also for the fantastic team you had.

"Every single person went out of their way to make each visit perfect and were friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. Thank you all for creating such a special place."

Many restaurants and retailers have been forced to shut down in the UK due to insurmountable financial pressures with increased minimum wage and national insurance contributions.

As of August 5, the UK had lost 1,122 bars, restaurants, clubs and pubs since October when Rachel Reeves announced her Budget. That is a rate of two venues every day, according to figures from data providers CGA and AlixPartners.
