UK households urged to keep garden furniture inside on Sunday and Monday

UK households have been urged to bring any garden furniture indoors or to secure it in place on today (September 14) and tomorrow (September 15),

The advice comes as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Sunday, September 14, 6 pm to Monday, September 15, 8 pm. "Strong and gusty winds" are expected to hit a large part of the UK during this period, for which the weather warning is set in place. As a result, the weather agency has urged households to protect their properties from damage and other people from injuries.

It said: "Don't risk injury to others or damage to your property. Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them in high winds."

In addition to garden furniture, households are advised to bring inside bins and plant pots, turn trampolines upside down or secure them with tent pegs, and ensure shed doors are locked.

Strong winds will impact most of England and Wales from Sunday evening (September 14) to the late afternoon on Monday, September 14.

Stephen Kocher, Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, said: "Strong west or southwesterly winds will arrive across coastal areas of southwest England and Wales during Sunday evening, spreading inland and eastwards during Monday morning.

"Gusts of 45 - 55 mph are expected widely inland areas, while gusts of 60 - 70 mph are possible at times along exposed coasts and hills."

The intense weather conditions are expected to cause short term loss of power and other services, delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport, and affect some bus and train services. Brits are advised to be well prepared and caution when travelling in heavy wind.

The Met Office warns that "windy weather can cause delays and making driving conditions dangerous" and has offer steps to help prepare motorists ahead of any travels.

It said: "Plan your route, check for delays and road closures. Listen out for travel updates on your car radio/sat nav. If you don't have essentials in your car then pack for the worst (warm clothing, food, drink, banket, torch). Take a fully charged mobile phone with an in-car charger or battery pack."

It is also recommened to stay up to date with the weather forecast in your area as weather warning can change quickly.
