An unexpected ingredient sitting in your kitchen cupboard can transform your wooden floors, experts have said. Hardwood floors are a popular feature in British homes, working in both classic designs and more modern houses. Keeping them clean can sometimes be hard, especially after you have had wooden floors for quite some time. However, experts have shared the best ways to keep them shiny, and one of them involves a kitchen item you have plenty of.

According to UK-based hardwood flooring specialists Just Wood, black tea is a great way to get your wooden floors shining like brand new. Many Brits have an abundance of black tea in their cupboards. Millions of Brits drink tea every day, but many do not know that it has other uses. One of those uses is actually cleaning hardwood floors. The properties of black tea make it an ideal way to clean and polish wooden floors so that they look shiny and new.

According to the wooden floor experts, all you need to do is boil a litre of water and add three tea bags, allowing it to steep for around ten minutes. Then, you simply dip a cleaning pad in the water and use it to clean your floors.

This works because black tea has tannic acid, the experts reveal. This makes it perfect for cleaning and polishing floors.

The same solution was suggested by the experts at Apartment Therapy, who say black tea is a great way to bring out the wood's naturally warm tones. Additionally, black tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, which contains polyphenolic compounds that prevent microbial growth, they said.

They advise homeowners to vacuum first to make sure all dust and debris are off the floor. They then advise you to boil eight teabags in a gallon of water and let them seep for 10 to 15 minutes.

Then, place it in a mop bucket and use it to clean your floors. However, you shouldn't wet your wooden floors too often, as this can cause them to trap moisture and even split.

Other methods that experts advise to clean wooden floors are using vinegar and a homemade lemon and oil solution.
