Prayagraj: Panic gripped High Court Crossing and adjoining areas under the limits of Civil Lines police station on Sunday after a mentally challenged man allegedly wrapped an old sweater and put a cap on the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar late on Saturday evening.
The man also offered sweets to the statue. The police detained the man and registered an FIR regarding the incident.
On Sunday, members of the BSP and SP demanded that district authorities and police higher-ups install a new statue and ensure the safety and security of the statue round the clock. Workers of the Samajwadi Party also demanded the installation of a CCTV set for close surveillance.
Inspector (Civil Lines) Ramashraya Yadav told TOI that a mentally challenged man, who allegedly wrapped an old sweater and put a cap on the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar on Saturday evening, was detained.
He added that cops were probing the incident thoroughly.
