Aizawl: After the resurgence of the African Swine Fever (ASF) in Mizoram since late March, a total of 3,092 pigs have died as of Sunday while 986 pigs have been culled, officials of the state animal husbandry and veterinary department said.
The officials said among affected urban areas the four districts, Siaha town bordering Myanmar continues to be the hardest hit with 27 daily casualties registered in 13 localities on Sunday and cumulative deaths rising to 1,710.
Though no pig deaths were registered in the three other districts on Sunday, the cumulative deaths of pigs in Lawngtlai town bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh has risen to 1,193.
Meanwhile, the state veterinary department has declared 46 localities in Siaha, Lawngtlai and Lunglei district headquarters as well as Zawlnuam town in Mamit district as ASF affected as of Sunday.
Though the number of pig deaths witnessed a surge during the first part of this week, it came down from Thursday.
However, pigs continue to die due to the infection.
The rise in temperature and sporadic showers are conducive for the spread of the porcine disease, veterinary experts said.
