NEW DELHI: TCS, India's largest IT services firm, sees generative AI as more than just a tech trend, calling it a " civilisational shift " that will transform every industry.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the $30 billion company plans to build a "large pool of AI agents " to work alongside humans, creating a "human+AI" model for delivering future solutions.

"Achieving near-human reasoning capabilities, GenAI is not just another tech cycle, it is a civilisational shift," Chandrasekaran wrote to the company's shareholders in the annual report released on Tuesday.

"Looking ahead, we plan four distinct progressions. First, we establish a large pool of AI agents working alongside our human workforce. Second, we deliver solutions through a human+AI model," he said further outlining the future plans.

TCS has actively incorporated AI across its service offerings and developed intelligent agent solutions throughout its operational chain, according to Chandrasekaran's statement.

The company, which is also the largest private sector employer with over 6.07 lakh people on its rolls as of March 2025, will have the largest AI-trained workforce in 2025 and has also launched an enterprise-grade Gen AI platform christened ' TCS Wisdomnext ', he added.

TCS CEO and MD K Krithivasan said the company is seeing a shift among clients from isolated AI use cases to a stronger focus on scaling AI based on return on investment.

To support this, TCS is helping set up AI Centres of Excellence, AI labs, and deploying domain-specific solutions across operations, with over 150 AI agents already in use.

"The appointments of Aarthi Subramanian as the President and Chief Operating Officer, and Mangesh Sathe as our new Chief Strategy Officer announced earlier, are driven by the industry shifts led by AI," Krithivasan added.

Chandrasekaran highlighted specific achievements, including a drug discovery solution that generated over 1,300 molecules for a target concept, evaluating synthesisability and identifying 12 molecules for in vitro testing.

Over the past two years, since the emergence of Gen AI, IT companies have witnessed reduced workforce growth or decreased staffing levels, which they attribute to automation and previous substantial recruitment during the Covid period.

TCS leadership has consistently stated that whilst AI will not negatively affect employment numbers, it will transform the nature of work responsibilities.

Krithivasan shared details about the company's FY25 performance with shareholders, highlighting new contracts worth $39.4 billion, including agreements with European retailer Primark and Xerox.

The organisation achieved a 6% annual revenue increase to Rs 2.55 lakh crore, whilst maintaining operating margins at 24.3%.

Earlier on Tuesday, TCS shares closed 1.11% lower at Rs 3,498.90 on the BSE, compared to a 0.76% drop in the benchmark index.
