Despite another tough night on the scoreboard, Angel Reese made history Tuesday as the Chicago Sky fell to the Phoenix Mercury , 94–89. Reese, in her second WNBA season, delivered a milestone performance that confirmed her as one of the league’s emerging stars. With her 13-point, 15-rebound double-double, the former LSU standout became the fastest player in WNBA history to record at least 500 points and 500 rebounds, accomplishing the feat in just 38 games.

Angel Reese sets pace for all-time greats amid Chicago Sky’s struggles

Although the Chicago Sky remained winless at 0–4, Reese’s individual effort gave fans something to celebrate. Entering Tuesday night’s contest with 489 points and 487 rebounds, Reese needed just modest numbers to secure a milestone no other WNBA player has achieved so quickly. With 38.1 seconds left in the third quarter, she pulled down her 13th rebound, it was her 500th career board, and promptly added her 11th point from the free-throw line, completing the historic moment in one play.

The WNBA confirmed the achievement on social media, posting: “Another milestone for Angel Reese. The sophomore becomes the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 500+ PTS and 500+ REB — doing it in just 38 games. She breaks the previous record held by Tina Charles (44 games).” Reese surpassed not only Charles but also Yolanda Griffith, who achieved the mark in 49 games.

Adding to her resume, Polymarket Hoops reported that with her ninth rebound of the night, Reese also became the fastest player to collect 50 rebounds in a season.

While Chicago’s overall record is disappointing, Reese has remained a consistent force in the paint. After leading the league in rebounds in her rookie season, she’s averaging near double-doubles again in 2025.

Tuesday’s contest saw other bright spots for the Sky, including Ariel Atkins’ season-high 21 points and a double-double from Courtney Vandersloot (15 points, 11 assists). Kamilla Cardoso chipped in with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Kia Nurse hit four 3-pointers to finish with 14.

But despite leading by 16 points early in the third quarter, the Sky collapsed under a Phoenix surge led by Satou Sabally (20 points) and rookie Kitija Laksa (season-high 18). Alyssa Thomas added a historic stat line of her own, becoming the first player in WNBA history to record at least 10 points, five assists, and five rebounds in each of the first five games of a season.
