Pune: Divya Deshmukh, 19, showed her confidence and scored an exciting win over Batkhuyag Munguntuul of Mongolia who is twice her age in the seventh round of Women’s FIDE Grand Prix on Monday.
Divya’s fourth win in the tournament took her to five points with just two rounds to go. When she came for an official interaction with FIDE, she felt that the K Humpy vs Zhu Jiner game was heading towards a draw.

But there was drama in store as the Chinese blundered on the 44th move — Qxb4 (taking pawn) — in the queen, pawns, double knight vs Humpy’s queen, pawns, double bishop. The 22-year-old lost her knight in the process. The 38-year-old Indian veteran, who is known for her stability, needed only 11 more moves to force the resignation on Monday.
Humpy is now the sole leader of the tournament with 5.5 points. Tuesday’s game between joint second placed Zhu and Divya, is expected to have a decisive bearing on the tournament’s final standings.
Divya said, “I have lost to her twice but there is always time to turn it around.” It was Humpy’s first classical win over the Chinese. She had lost to Zhu (Elo 2525) at FIDE GP in 2023. “I was surprised by the opponent’s choice of Queens Indian defence. I got the tempo later on but 24.Qf5 was probably not required as I was oversmart,” she said.
