The National Payments Corporation of India ( NPCI ), Razorpay , and OpenAI have come together to introduce " Agentic Payments " on ChatGPT . This new partnership aims to explore artificial intelligence (AI)-driven commerce across India. This collaborative effort seeks to create a seamless, conversational way to complete digital transactions in the ChatGPT app. This initiative, currently in pilot phase, is designed to allow users to complete payments without exiting the AI app, where they discover and select products. It will combine Razorpay's digital finance tools, the NPCI's UPI infrastructure, which handles billions of transactions monthly, and OpenAI's ChatGPT to offer improved shopping experiences to users in the coming days.
The new payment functionality uses UPI innovations such as UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay. The technology is supported by Razorpay’s banking partners, including Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank . Bigbasket , a Tata enterprise, is recognised as one of the first merchants to enable customers to shop using these new AI-powered experiences on ChatGPT.
How ChatGPT’s Agentic Payments feature will work for users
In a blog post, NPCI explains how ChatGPT’s agentic payment feature will work with an example. A user can ask the chatbot to help them “order ingredients for a Thai-style vegetable curry for 4 people from BigBasket.” The AI agent then checks BigBasket’s catalogue, suggests suitable product options, and upon the user’s confirmation, completes the order using Razorpay’s payment system.
Throughout the process, users will be able to maintain complete control with real-time tracking and the ability to revoke actions instantly, ensuring the experience remains secure, transparent, and user-focused.
Under this initiative, Razorpay, NPCI, and OpenAI will explore AI-driven payment use cases, focusing on personalised and secure AI commerce through conversational shopping and checkout experiences.
The collaboration will examine how these innovations can be applied across different commerce sectors and agentic scenarios using UPI. In the future, AI agents could be granted payment credentials to autonomously complete transactions on behalf of users, while ensuring the process remains safe, secure, and entirely under user control.
