Sony ULT TOWER 9 review: A powerful party speaker that shakes the room

Send Push
Sony has built a strong name in the premium audio market, and its latest launch — the Sony ULT TOWER 9 — continues that trend. Priced at Rs 99,990, this floor-standing speaker enters a category where expectations are naturally high — not just in sound, but also in design, presence, and overall experience. Over the years, Sony has built a reputation for blending advanced tech with lifestyle-focused products, and the ULT TOWER 9 seems to follow the same path. The big question is whether this speaker can truly live up to its premium tag and justify the price. Let’s find out.

Design

The first thing we noticed about the Sony ULT Tower 9 is its size and weight. At around 410 mm wide, 910 mm tall, and 456 mm deep, this is not a speaker you can tuck into a corner and forget about. It weighs close to 30 kg, which means that once it’s in place, it’s likely to stay there. Setting it up in our living room felt like bringing in a piece of furniture — it immediately becomes a part of the space and demands attention.

The design is bold and boxy, but with enough detailing to give it a premium touch. We found that its height works well in larger rooms or even outdoors during get-togethers.

On the practical side, Sony has included plenty of input options. There’s a USB Type-A port for playing music directly from a drive, a standard 3.5mm audio-in jack, and an optical input that supports up to 96kHz PCM audio. For more interactive use, there are two 6.3mm jacks — one for a mic and another that doubles as a mic or guitar input, depending on the mode. In our tests, plugging in a microphone instantly turned the Tower 9 into a karaoke machine, while the guitar mode gave it more flexibility for casual jam sessions.

We also liked the small but useful addition of a USB Type-A output, which can charge a phone or another device. In real-world use, it came in handy when our phone was running low during playback.

Overall, the ULT Tower 9 feels solid, heavy, and built to last — but it also takes up space and is not something you move around casually.

Performance
Using the Sony ULT Tower 9 felt less like testing a speaker and more like setting up a live party inside our home. The first thing we noticed was the bass — it’s so massive and powerful that you can actually feel it in your chest. If there’s one word that sums up this speaker, it’s bass.

At the center of this experience is the ULT button. Pressing it takes the bass to another level — deeper, heavier, and more immersive. Sony’s Enhanced Power and Sound Pressure technology keeps this intensity clear and distortion-free, even when we pushed the volume higher than usual. This is thanks to the massive woofer and Sony’s X-Balanced Speaker Unit, which maximizes diaphragm area to deliver powerful sound without sacrificing clarity.

What really surprised us was the 360-degree sound. With rear tweeters, the ULT Tower 9 filled the space no matter where we stood. Add party lights that sync with the beat and subtle EQ options, and the whole setup feels purpose-built for gatherings. Despite its heavy build, the wheels make it easier to roll around if you need to move it. And for anyone in the mood to sing, karaoke support with mic inputs adds to the fun.

When it came to music, the ULT Tower 9 did not disappoint. Bollywood dance tracks like “Kala Chashma” and “Nashe Si Chadh Gayi” sounded killer, filling the room with energy. Punjabi hits like “3 Peg” and “Laung Da Lashkara” turned the party up even more with booming bass and crisp vocals. Some bass enthusiasts in our group even asked for more punch, and when we played bass-heavy tracks like “Sippin” by Aortaa, the floor genuinely felt like it was shaking.

The sound is undeniably big, but if you want to go even bigger, you can connect additional Sony speakers wirelessly for a stadium-like feel. We also tried the TV Sound Booster feature, which gave movie dialogues more depth and made action scenes sound larger than life — a noticeable upgrade from standard TV audio.

Overall, the ULT Tower 9 delivers a performance that’s larger than life, made for people who want to feel their music as much as hear it.

Verdict

Priced at Rs 99,990, the Sony ULT Tower 9 sits in the premium category, and that alone makes it a tough sell for casual listeners. It’s big, heavy, and unapologetically designed for people who want sound that can shake walls and light up parties. The massive bass and 360-degree sound may feel overwhelming for some, but for bass lovers and party enthusiasts, this is pure delight. With karaoke support, TV Sound Booster, and easy pairing with other speakers, it goes beyond being just a music system.
