Heavy rains bring Hyderabad to standstill, unleash traffic and waterlogging woes

Hyderabad: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds hit the city on Thursday afternoon, causing severe waterlogging and traffic congestion in several areas.

The city traffic police reported heavy traffic jams at several key intersections and advised commuters to take alternate routes.

Heavy waterlogging was reported at several areas, including Tadbund X Road and Shaikpet Nala, causing traffic to move at a snail's pace. The stretch near Akshaya Hotel in Malakpet was severely congested, affecting the movement of vehicles in both directions between Dilsukhnagar and Malakpet.

The situation was equally difficult near Madhura Sweet House in Mehdipatnam, where authorities asked commuters to avoid the NMDC-Mehdipatnam road due to heavy waterlogging.

"Traffic police officials have been deployed at the affected places to manage the situation and direct vehicles to safer routes," said a senior traffic police official.

Similarly, Malakpet Road Under Bridge (RUB) also witnessed slow traffic from Nalgonda X Roads to Azampura due to waterlogging. Waterlogging was also reported at Alugaddabavi RUB and the road from SA Bazar Mosque to MJ Market Junction.

Meanwhile, the downpour accompanied by strong winds led to the uprooting of a tree at KCP junction near Panjagutta, severely affecting traffic flow.

Motorists travelling towards Panjagutta from Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya statue near Khairatabad flyover and from Taj Krishna towards the statue were advised to take alternate routes to avoid the obstruction.

Several users also took to social media to share both the warnings and their ordeals in the torrential rain. Shravan Kumar, a pharmacy student, posted a video showing a waterlogged road in Begumpet. ""eavy rains in Begumpet! Roads are turning into rivers," Shravan tweeted.

Another ‘X' user, Arihant, posted a video showing two-wheelers submerged in flowing water. "Fifteen minutes of rain in Hyderabad and we have a brand new water park," he tweeted.

The same sentiment was echoed in another post, which read: "Just an hour and a half of rain and all the roads are waterlogged. Bad drainage and traffic jams everywhere."
