Margao: In a development that promises to ease public inconvenience, work on installing a new lift has commenced at the Osia commercial complex in the SGPDA (South Goa planning and development authority) market, Margao. The installation, which began earlier this week, is expected to be completed within three weeks, bringing relief to hundreds of visitors who frequent various govt offices housed in the building.
The existing lift’s persistent malfunctions caused severe hardships to the public, particularly senior citizens and differently-abled persons who visited the departments across the four-storey structure. The complex houses several crucial offices, including the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA), the town and country planning department, the commercial taxes department, the excise department, and the regional transport office.
“This is a welcome move that was long overdue,” said Dattaram Naik, a regular visitor to the commercial taxes department. “The dysfunctional lift made it extremely difficult for people, especially the elderly, to access various offices. Many had to climb several flights of stairs multiple times a day.”
The new installation comes after months of complaints from the public. Sources said that the work was assigned to a reputed elevator company and will be executed according to the latest safety standards.
